Hunter Books
"T30938" John Murray, London 1967, first edition, 226 pages, illustrated with B & W photographs and two maps. The first real contact between white men and the elephant people of Kenya, the Liangulu, came about when Tsavo was declared a national park in 1948 Though some earlier explorers had mentioned them, it was not until the park wardens started work that any clear picture of the tribe began to appear. William Woodley and the Park's team managed to make contact and win some of the Liangulu over. They learned about the tribe's superb physique, their use of a big bow unique in Africa with a heavier pull than the English longbow, their deadly akocanthera poison, and the key role they played in the illicit ivory traffic. ARABIAN SANDS
Hunter Books
"T28184" Dutton, N.Y. 1959, 1st U.S. edition stated, 326 pages, B & W photos, map affixed to rear paste-down. Author's first book. The remarkable true story of one of the last great adventures of modern times. His five years of travel with the nomad Arabs in the unknown deserts of southern Arabia. Thesiger came to Arabia in 1945 when the head of the Locust Control for the Middle East asked him to survey and collect information on locust movement in the mysterious Empty Quarter of the Arabian desert. He traveled through regions where no European had traveled before. Barefoot, carrying the most limited supplies of food and water, riding and sometimes leading camels, Thesiger and his Arab companions set out on one of the most grueling and exciting journeys ever recorded in the literature of exploration. By dressing, eating, almost thinking like a native, Thesiger came as close to living the life of a Bedu Arab as a Westerner ever will. His descriptions of the fantastic privations they endure without complaint, of their strange customs, of their innate loyalty and generosity as well as their fierce fighting, form a magnificent picture of these little-known people. Dust Jacket is not price-clipped and is complete and is Near Fine. The book itself is Fine.  ID#: 4472

MY KENYA DAYS
Hunter Books
"SN30077" Harper Collins, London 1994, first edition, 224 pages, profusely illustrated with spectacular B & W photographs. When he first came to Kenya in 1960, Thesiger made a series of long journeys on foot with camels to Lake Turkana, Marsabit and other remote areas, drawn by the lure of what was formerly Kenya's Northern Frontier District, its varied wildlife and distinctive, nomadic tribes. In Tanzania, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and traversed the Maasai country with donkeys. Later, as an honorary Game Warden, he led anti-poaching patrols in Kenya. The companionship of tribesmen in their traditional setting has played an essential part in all Thesiger's travels: Rendille warriors dancing by moonlight; Turkana in pursuit of buffalo; and a closely observed account of Samburu moran during their initiation ceremonies. A fascinating book by the great explorer. Dust jacket and book are Very Fine.  ID#: 3499

IVORY - SCOURGE OF AFRICA
Hunter Books
"JL26088" Harper, N.Y. 1931, stated 1st edition (code letters K-F) 256 pages, illustrated with B & W photographs, map on front endpaper The author resided four and one-half years in Zanzibar at the turn of the century and during that period bought hundreds of tons of ivory. Traveling frequently upcountry he knew firsthand the bloodshed and cruelty, the inhumanity and suffering the precious ivory caused. The quest for ivory turned thousands of square miles of fertile country into a wilderness of rapine, plunder and fire-blackened ruin. Hundreds of thousands of mighty elephants were slain, but for every elephant slain for its ivory a dozen human lives were wrecked or snuffed out in the search, the seizure, and the transport of it. Zanzibar was the capital from whence Tippoo Tib and the the Arab raiders set out on their inhuman errands. The brown original cover and spine label are unfaded and intact.. The book is tight, clean and without marks or inscriptions. Moderate shelfwear. Scarce. Very Good Plus.  ID#: 4304
