Thence across the Prairies to Winnipeg, with a chapter on "Life in a Lumber Camp", then the last chapter: "Homeward Bound". They returned to England in December . THE DANGEROUS SUMMER
Hunter Books
"T25728" Scribner's, N.Y. 1985, 1st edition, 228 pages, B & W photos. Long and interesting introduction by James A. Michener who was himself an expert on bull fighting. In 1959, Hemingway, near the end of his career and his life, was commissioned by Life magazine to return to Spain and write a 10,000 word magazine article revisiting the scenes he had written so vividly about many years before in ""Death in the Afternoon."" Papa spent the summer following the fights of two of Spain's most famous bull-fighters, Ordonez and Dominguin. Instead of a short magazine article, Hemingway wrote 120,000 words which Life drastically condensed. Here for the first time is the full length work, Hemingway's last major effort, still edited down, but with flashes of the master's brilliant writing. Michener wrote ""Hemingway's description of the historic Malaga corrida of 14 August 1959 is one of the most evocative and exact summaries of a corrida ever penned. It is a masterpeice. That afternoon the brothers-in-law (Ordonez and Dominguin) fought an exceptional set of Domecq bulls and the fame of the corrida still reverberates, because the two men cut ten ears, four tails and two hooves. There had never before been such a performance in an arena of category."" The unclipped dust jacket and book are Very Fine. An exceptionally nice copy.  ID#: 4351

"T30938" John Murray, London 1967, first edition, 226 pages, illustrated with B & W photographs and two maps. The first real contact between white men and the elephant people of Kenya, the Liangulu, came about when Tsavo was declared a national park in 1948 Though some earlier explorers had mentioned them, it was not until the park wardens started work that any clear picture of the tribe began to appear. William Woodley and the Park's team managed to make contact and win some of the Liangulu over. They learned about the tribe's superb physique, their use of a big bow unique in Africa with a heavier pull than the English longbow, their deadly akocanthera poison, and the key role they played in the illicit ivory traffic.
